Who I am

I am a voice goddess, adventurer, and free spirit, currently based in Florence, Italy, where I am the Head of Voice for the National Theatre School of Acting affiliated with Teatro della Pergola. Prior to Florence I lived in Istanbul, Turkey for almost 4 years, and before that I split my time between New York City and Los Angeles. I have helped people unleash the power of their soul through their voices on 5 continents.
My clients include politicians, CEO’s, entrepreneurs, Broadway, film and television actors, even royalty (no joke).

My story…

I was training as an actor when suddenly my voice left me. I had no vibration left, and could only communicate in painful whispers. I went to a famous Ear Nose and Throat doctor who told me that I had a paralyzed vocal fold and probably I would never speak again. I quit school, unable to do my coursework with no voice, and I went home devastated. I had no voice for almost a year. I realized that I had lost my connection with my deeper voice, my soul’s voice, my truth, my mythological self. That’s why I lost my literal voice. The most important pathway back to my voice was the Linklater Method-Kristin Linklater is a world-renowned voice expert for actors and developed the technique “Freeing the Natural Voice” (she is also the greatest mentor of my life). As I rehabilitated myself- I spent hours in my room visualizing vibrations pouring up from my hip sockets, onto my lips, out into the space…. Tasted vibrations on my lips (where there were none!), tried to find pleasure in whatever squeaks I could find and in stretching and moving my body. Within a month, I had my voice back. I also reconnected to my feelings, I became detached from achieving a particular result, I became much more aware of being in the present moment and just allowing my body to lead me. I rehabilitated my voice by coming into contact with my deeper human truths, and finding the courage to reveal them. I continuously asked myself, am I willing for that to be heard?

This discovery led me to train and become certified as a Linklater teacher for actors, and then I continued to develop my own process that I have had the pleasure of sharing with my clients for almost 20 years. And so I ask you: are you willing to be heard?
"Susan Main is one of the best teachers, voice or otherwise, I have ever had the pleasure or privilege of working with. She is a tough, supportive, curious, and hugely generous teacher who has profoundly changed my life and work. I cannot recommend her highly enough!"

"In preparation for my TEDx talk, Susan not only helped me to speak more clearly and powerfully, but she helped me access the true core of my message. I was able to feel confident delivering the biggest talk of my career thus far, and walk away with a deeper understanding of who I am and what I stand for. Susan’s no-nonsense approach is golden: super-effective, challenging, and FUN!"

"Apart from being one of the most challenging and inspiring teachers I've ever worked with, Susan Main, in my experience, is a miracle worker. I had the second of two voiceovers for a major client and had completely lost my voice in between. I went to Susan the morning of the gig with barely the capacity for whisper and she brought me to full, working voice in 45 minutes. The client couldn't tell the difference. As someone who has struggled with hoarseness all her life, working with Susan has empowered me to be in control and not at the mercy of my voice."

"Susan Main changed my work, my life and my Voice forever. In the Spring of 2012 I had heaps of talent, gusto and training. I also had lesions on my vocal cords. I had lost a significant amount of notes in my range and was on my way to surgery and months of vocal rest. A trusted friend suggested I see Susan before I take a knife to my vocal chords. Desperate to sing at a meaningful concert in a month, I did. Susan worked tirelessly to rehabilitate my voice and confidence as she reconnected me with the reason why I do what I do.
I got back on stage and killed it after a month and never underwent surgery. Since I met Susan, I have toured the world singing, booked 15 national VoiceOver TV commercials, 2 feature films and found the fun in acting again. Susan rehabilitated my speaking and singing voice and reignited the fire inside me to do the work and do it well. I am forever indebted to Susan for this and so much more."

"I've worked with Susan many times, and she has a secret gift-which she delivers to the participants in her classes or warm-ups-while apparently she is just lightly and humbly teaching the exercises, even with a little hint of selfmockery, the actors get touched somewhere deep and react by opening themselves, which most often leads to brilliant performances.-Alessandro Fabrizi, Italian director, actor, and teacher Susan Main is a magical combination of sensitivity and practicality. She comes to training the human voice with a breadth of knowledge that has been selectively shared by some of the world's most eloquent and versatile teachers of body and voice. Coupled with her curiosity for understanding humanity, Susan is equipped far beyond many who might assume to take on the intricate task of nurturing and developing the human voice."
